First product expected to be Upper Deck Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 25th Anniversary
Upper Deck has acquired licensing rights to the Harry Potter franchise in a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, the company announced Wednesday.
The trading card manufacturer will create a series of Harry Potter products under the new license, starting with Upper Deck Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 25th Anniversary.
According to Upper Deck, the release will feature flagship inserts and parallels such as high gloss and Outburst, including a Gold 1/1.
Fleer Ultra Harry Potter will be the second release under Upper Deck’s new agreement.
Release dates and card imagery for the sets weren’t immediately available.
“Harry Potter is easily one of the most sought-after licenses in today’s entertainment landscape. The combination of nostalgia, iconic characters and rich storytelling has sustained its cultural relevance for decades ...” Upper Deck president Jason Masherah said in a statement.
“The fandom for the world of Harry Potter is overwhelming, and we’re excited to give this community new ways to enjoy the wizarding world through beautifully crafted collectibles.”
The Harry Potter franchise joins a current entertainment and non-sports portfolio at Upper Deck that includes the DC Universe, Looney Tunes, Blizzard and more.
Upper Deck added licensing rights for DC characters in 2024 and released its first Batman and Superman sets under the deal in 2025.
Created by author J.K. Rowling, the first book in the Potter franchise was published in 1997. The series now includes seven fantasy novels and eight films, making it one of the most popular franchises of all time.
That popularity has also made the franchise a favorite among collectors, with trading cards, first-edition books and original artwork highly coveted.
A first-edition copy of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone” sold for $45,732 at Lyon & Turnbull in June 2024. Days later, the original artwork for the book sold for $1.92 million at Sotheby’s to set a record for any item from the franchise.
The record for a Harry Potter card to date, according to Card Ladder, is the $47,400 paid at Goldin in 2022 for a 2004 Artbox Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban card featuring autographs from the film’s trio of stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
