Chelsea revive interest in Barcelona midfielder as part of €150m summer splurge

Chelsea’s long-standing admiration for Fermin Lopez has not faded, and the Barcelona midfielder is once again emerging as a name to watch ahead of future transfer windows. 

According to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, the Premier League club are still closely monitoring the academy graduate after failing to sign him last summer.

The report suggests that Chelsea are now considering a renewed push for Fermin in order to support their new head coach, Liam Rosenior. 

In their bid to accelerate the project at Stamford Bridge, the FIFA Club World Cup champions are prepared to make a major financial commitment, with a potential €150 million package being discussed for two players, namely Fermin and Rafael Leao.

Chelsea are ready to go big

It is said that from Chelsea’s perspective, Fermin represents far more than just a promising young midfielder. 

Within the club’s sporting structure, there is a strong belief that his profile fits perfectly with the demands of modern Premier League football. 

In fact, sources in England indicate that Chelsea’s directors are particularly impressed by his high intensity when pressing without the ball, and his competitive edge in duels.

Understandably, Fermin’s rise at Barcelona has not gone unnoticed across Europe. 

Despite fierce competition in midfield under Hansi Flick, he has carved out a role through energy, intelligence, and a willingness to take responsibility in advanced areas. 

At this stage, there is no formal offer on the table. However, the outlet notes that Chelsea’s interest remains active and could intensify in the upcoming transfer windows, depending on how Fermin’s role at Barcelona develops. 

For now, though, both Barcelona and the player are fully focused elsewhere. 

As such, Fermin’s representatives, along with club officials, are prioritising the Spanish Super Cup and maintaining stability during a crucial phase of the season. 

For Barcelona, the midfielder is viewed as an important asset for both the present and the future, and there is no desire to entertain distractions in the middle of the season.
