The Deep Dive: Even for experienced golfers, standing in the fairway and pulling out a 4-iron when you need to hit a high-quality shot gets your heart pumping a little quicker. For most recreational golfers, it can be the start of an adventure, because long irons can even be challenging to hit well on the range. Add some pressure from your buddies watching on the course, and you've got the recipe for either greatness or disaster. For that reason, hybrids can become a trusted second-shot solution for many players or a go-to club on long par 3s. TaylorMade has just released a new family of them, the Qi4D Rescue clubs, and each is designed to suit a different type of player. That said, they each make it easier to launch the ball higher, interact with the turf more effectively and get more consistent results than you would with a long iron.
The Qi4D, Qi4D Max, and Qi4D Max Lite each start with the same foundation. TaylorMade uses a C300 steel face with a variable-thickness Inverted Cone design. It provides plenty of speed on center hits and protects ball speed over a larger portion of the hitting area when you mis-hit the ball. All three clubs also have a carbon fiber crown that reduces weight on the top of the head, plus an updated Thru-Slot Speed Pocket, positioned behind the leading edge in the sole. It is engineered to allow the lower portion of the face to flex more on low-struck shots by pulling the sweet spot down toward the region where most golfers tend to mis-hit their long irons and hybrids.
The standard Qi4D Rescue (2/17 degrees, 3/19, 4,22, 5/25) is intended to be the all-purpose option, sitting between compact “players” hybrids and larger, fairway-wood-like shapes. Its size and CG placement are designed to balance forgiveness with the ability to flight shots or shape them when needed. It has an 8-gram weight screw in the sole. The weight is not designed to be adjusted by players, but fitters can swap it for other weights to tweak the swing weight, launch angle and spin rate. The standard Qi4D Rescue is the one version that comes with a 3-degree adjustable hosel, allowing players and fitters to increase or decrease the club's loft. For many golfers, this will be the most familiar-looking and most versatile head in the lineup.
Qi4D Max (3/20 degrees, 4/23, 5/26, 6/30, 7/34) was designed for players who place a higher priority on stability and a higher launch. It features a noticeably larger footprint (its about about 17 percent bigger), which allowed TaylorMade designers to push the 8-gram weight screw in the sole even further back. Getting it further back helps golfers get the ball in the air more easily and boosts stability on off-center hits. The Max shape also provides confidence at address without becoming oversized. Available in five lofts, the Qi4D Max does not have an adjustable hosel.
Qi4D Max Lite (4/23 degrees, 5/26, 6/30, 7/34) mirrors the Max design but with dramatically reduced overall weight. The men’s version is built approximately 30 grams lighter (with the weight screw in the sole being 4 grams instead of 8 grams), and the women’s version is about 32 grams lighter. That lighter package could help golfers generate more clubhead speed. The Qi4D Max Lite does not have an adjustable hosel.
With three distinct heads, each built around refined shaping and a tuned CG placement, the Qi4D Rescue family gives golfers clear choices for the top of the bag. Whether a player needs height, confidence, lighter weight or a middle-ground profile, the Qi4D line is built to deliver predictable long-iron replacement performance without requiring swing changes.
