No title drive for Norris in streets of Woking

It was hoped McLaren would drive a Formula 1 car in Woking as they did when Hakkinen won the title.

The McLaren Formula 1 team has confirmed it will not be hosting events in Woking to celebrate Lando Norris's first world championship win.

McLaren, which is based in the Surrey town, secured the drivers' and constructors' double this year - its first since 1998.

MP Will Forster says the team is "putting Woking on the map for all the right reasons and it means we as a town have got some civic pride".

Mr Forster said he remembered Mika Hakkinen driving around the town in a Formula 1 car when he won the 1998 championship, but McLaren have now confirmed that will not be the case this time around.

In December, Woking Borough Council leader Ann‑Marie Barker wrote to McLaren's CEO Zak Brown to congratulate the team..

She said: "I do hope that we can celebrate this historic achievement locally.

"February's town‑centre celebration of your 2024 Constructors' Championship was a tremendous success, with activities fully booked and exceptional community engagement.

"We would be delighted to support your future plans so our community can once again share in the pride of your success."

On Thursday, the BBC asked McLaren about their plans for celebrating Norris's win, but a spokesperson said: "I'm afraid we won't be hosting any celebrations in Woking this time unfortunately as the team are super busy preparing for the season ahead."

It will come as a disappointment to those hoping to see Norris driving through the streets after becoming the first Brit to win the driver's title since Sir Lewis Hamilton in 2020.
