How Barcelona have fared against Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup finals under new format

The Spanish Super Cup has surely become a familiar territory for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Ever since the competition switched to a four-team format in 2020, the tournament has consistently gravitated towards one outcome – a Clasico final.

While the revamped structure was initially designed to add variety and excitement, it has instead highlighted the growing dominance of Spain’s two biggest clubs on neutral soil.

Interestingly, fans had to wait until 2023 to witness the first Clasico final under the new format. Since then, the rivalry has taken over the competition entirely.

As such, this season marks the fourth consecutive year that Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet in the final.

How have Barcelona performed?

In January 2023, Barcelona left with a statement victory. Xavi Hernández’s side outplayed Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid and secured a 3-1 win that barely reflected Barça’s superiority on the night.

The following year delivered a completely different narrative, as Real Madrid ruthlessly returned the favour, dismantling Barcelona 4-1.

Then came the most recent chapter in Jeddah. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona produced one of their most dominant Clasico performances in recent Super Cup history.

The 5-2 victory was effectively sealed before the interval, as Barça’s aggressive pressing and attacking fluidity overwhelmed Madrid from the first whistle.

From a historical standpoint, the rivalry in the Spanish Super Cup has now reached 18 meetings.

This includes encounters from the old two-legged finals as well as single-match clashes in the current format.

Real Madrid hold the statistical advantage with 10 wins, while Barcelona have claimed 6 victories, with two matches ending level.
