As part of the fun surrounding our 50th anniversary, Golfweek has been walking down Memory Lane with a number of former employees who helped make the brand what it is today.
Today, we chat with a Golfweek employee who worked just a few years at the website before going on to become a staple on TV sets: Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner.
When did you work at Golfweek?
2010-2012
What was your Golfweek title, and give us a brief description of what you did.
Associate editor, Golfweek.com. I was tasked with creating and editing content for the website, as well as contributing to the magazine with notes, Forecaddie items, features and columns.
What's your current title and company?
Talent/senior writer, Golf Channel
What's the one moment you're proudest of while working with Golfweek?
Fresh out of college, I produced two cover stories (one on 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jim Liu, the other on the late Jarrod Lyle's emotional visit to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital) that still hang on the wall in my home office.
What's the 'hair-on-fire' moment you remember most vividly?
After covering the epic 2012 NCAA Championship final between Texas and Alabama, I wrote the game story for the website that was published shortly after the final putt dropped at Riviera. Hours later, during the editing process for the magazine back in Orlando, the editors realized they instead wanted to run it for the print edition. So I needed to flesh out the story even more, and fast, to make deadline.
What's your favorite golf course you've played and why?
North Berwick in Scotland. Eclectic mix of holes. Epic views. Loads of strategy. Fun and quirky and challenging. Cold pint downtown. Nothing better.
(Editor's note: We appreciate all the former employees who have contributed time and effort to this feature. The golf journalism community is a small one and we're proud of the achievements of all our former colleagues.)
