Newest Lions OC candidate has worked with Lamar Jackson, Amon-Ra St. Brown

Newest Detroit Lions OC candidate Tee Martin has a history with Lamar Jackson and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The Detroit Lions have yet another candidate for their offensive coordinator position, and he’s one that has some interesting connections. Per Jordan Schultz, the Lions will interview Ravens quarterbacks coach Tee Martin for the position next week. Martin will also interview for the Commanders’ offensive coordinator job.

Martin has served as the quarterback coach for the Ravens for the last three years under coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Todd Monken. There, of course, he’s worked closely with All-Pro quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won the MVP in 2023. Prior to that, Martin was the wide receivers coach for the Ravens for two seasons.

Martin himself was briefly an NFL quarterback. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2000 draft and spent time with the Eagles and Raiders before serving mostly as a backup for a couple years in the CFL as a Winnipeg Blue Bomber.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about Martin is that he served as Amon-Ra St. Brown’s positional coach at USC. Martin spent seven seasons (2012-18) with the Trojans, serving under several different head coaches: Lane Kiffin, Ed Orgeron, Steve Sarkisian, and Clay Helton. Throughout that time, Martin worked his way up from wide receivers coach to pass game coordinator and finally served as the offensive coordinator/WR coach for the last three years of his stay. That final year (2018) was his one overlapping season with St. Brown. That year, St. Brown caught 60 passes for 750 yards and three touchdowns.

“He has everything,” Martin said during St. Brown’s freshman year. “It’s really rare that a guy can do what he’s been able to do as a true freshman.”

Martin is now the fourth known candidate for the Lions’ offensive coordinator job, joining:

  • Commanders QB coach David Blough
  • Former Dolphins HC Mike McCarthy
  • Seahawks pass game coordinator Jake Peetz
