Spanish football icon David Villa recently spoke to AS in a wide-ranging interview where he shared his thoughts on a few topics linked to Real Madrid and the current state of Spanish football.
As one of the most respected strikers the country has ever produced, Villa’s opinions naturally carry weight, especially when the conversation turns to emerging forwards and the national team picture.
During the interview, Villa was asked about the latest attacking revelation to come out of Real Madrid – Gonzalo Garcia.
Given Villa’s experience at the highest level, both at club and international stage, he was widely regarded as the ideal figure to assess the youngster’s qualities.
Nothing but praise
Reflecting on Gonzalo’s rise and mentality, Villa praised not just his talent, but also his readiness to step up when required. He said,
“I think he’s a very young guy with fantastic skills, and above all, what I like most is that he’s a guy who is ready to seize the opportunity.

“I think he’s a great striker. He’s proving it, and I’ll say it again, what I like most about him is that he’s a player who is ready.
“In the end, he spent a long time unable to play, obviously due to decisions made not by the coach, but by Madrid’s forward line; and as soon as a forward was injured and he was given the opportunity, he took advantage of it.”
World Cup opportunities
The conversation then shifted towards the international stage, with Villa asked whether he sees Gonzalo Garcia earning a place at the World Cup.
Rather than focusing on one name, the former striker discussed the overall health of Spanish football and the depth currently available to the national team.
“That’s another question for the coach. I think it’s very good for the coach and for Spanish football that we have so many options.
“Not just up front, but in all positions. And ultimately, I have complete confidence in the coach to decide who will best represent us in the World Cup,” he concluded.
