Real Madrid defender set to miss Super Cup final vs Barcelona after fresh injury

Heading into tonight’s Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, Real Madrid were dealt with news that Ferland Mendy has been suffering from discomfort.

The Frenchman even missed Real Madrid’s training session, leading to fears that he may be ruled out of the final against Barcelona.

Ferland Mendy to be ruled out

Now, COPE claims that Ferland Mendy will indeed be ruled out for tonight’s Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona.

The report points out that the Frenchman missed Real Madrid’s last training session alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, thus reducing Xabi Alonso’s defensive options.

This clearly suggests Mendy will not be available for action when Real Madrid take on Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

A big blow for Real Madrid?

The absence of Mendy, though, will likely be inconsequential for Real Madrid as the Frenchman is not a key part of the squad.

Having struggled with injuries all season, Xabi Alonso has barely counted on the left-back in his first-team plans.

Even if he was fit for tonight’s encounter, Mendy would have likely started on the bench, behind Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia in the pecking order.

His latest injury does raise serious questions about his future, though, with Real Madrid reportedly open to listening to offers for the injury-prone fullback.

The former LOSC Lille starlet, though, still has a contract at Santiago Bernabeu that doesn’t expire until 2028. So it will be interesting to see how Real Madrid navigate this problem and convinces the defender to leave the club in the summer.

For now, all eyes will be on Mendy’s diagnosis as it will determine how serious the knock is and whether or not it will rule him out of action for weeks.
