The Horned Frogs lose another veteran defensive back to the portal.
The TCU Horned Frogs took another blow at the cornerback position, with redshirt senior Avery Helm departing for UNLV after three seasons in Fort Worth. A former Florida transfer, Helm started 11 games during the 2023 season, but missed the entire 2024 season to a knee injury and received a medical redshirt. Helm returned from his injury in 2025, but appeared in only four games and did not earn a starting role. The 6-foot-1, 185 pounder from Missouri City, Texas finished his TCU career with 27 total tackles, 19 solo stops and six pass breakups .
At UNLV, Helm will play his seventh and final season of college football while reuniting with new coach Dan Mullen, who coached Helm at Florida. Prior to arriving at TCU, Helm spent three seasons as a Gator, making his collegiate debut in the Cotton Bowl during the shortened 2020 COVID campaign. Helm played in 21 games and made 13 starts over the 2021 and 2022 seasons before transferring to the Horned Frogs. A four-star recruit out of high school, Helm signed with Florida over Tennessee, Missouri, Minnesota, Kansas State and more.
Helm’s departure further depletes the cornerback depth for the Horned Frogs, who are losing seniors Channing Canada and Jevon McIver Jr. to graduation. Helm is the third cornerback to enter the transfer portal, following true freshman Cam Jamerson and sixth-year veteran Elijah Jackson, a former Washington player who is leaving after only one season at TCU. Redshirt sophomore Vernon Glover Jr. is the only starter returning next season.
