How Patriots’ Mike Vrabel ended up with a bloody lip after playoff win

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel left the win with a painful souvenir.

FOXBOROUGH — It wasn’t enough to get him time in the blue medical tent and won’t land him on the Patriots' injury report this week, but New England coach Mike Vrabel didn’t come out of Sunday’s win unscathed.

Once Sunday’s playoff win over the Chargers was wrapped up, defensive lineman Milton Williams was celebrating by headbutting each of his teammates helmet-to-helmet.

When he reached his coach, Williams, who’d just delivered the game-winning sack, stayed in rhythm and caught Vrabel on the lip.

The ailment didn’t affect Vrabel’s ability to snap off a wisecrack.

“We talked to them about being willing to spill some blood out there, that the big dogs come out in January,” Vrabel said. “I think Milt took that to heart in the way that he played the game, in the way he finished the game. He came over and got me pretty good. That’s what happens.”

Williams said he got caught up in the moment.

“I was just turned. It was pure emotion. I think I head butted everybody,” he said. “I forgot Vrabes ain’t had no helmet on.”

Williams didn’t seem worried.

“He’ll be all right,” Williams said.
