Rosenior “challenged players” over “one thing” he admits in interview about tactics

Enzo Maresca was a coach who was known to come from the Pep Guardiola school. There are other recent Premier League coaches, like Ruben Amorim, who will always put their philosophy of the game above anything else.

Liam Rosenior is not one of them. As he admitted to Chelsea TV after the win on Saturday, he hardly has time to work with these players between games anyway.

Rosenior on having no time to get ideas across

Liam Rosenior reacts to Chelsea’s win over Charlton.

“I’ve got another two days. I think the biggest thing I challenged the players on was our reactions to set-backs, our intensity. Nothing tactical, nothing technical. These players are outstanding. They’ve been well coached before me,” the new boss said.

“I was very happy with the togetherness and the spirit of the group on Saturday. I was very happy with the intensity that they ran at, winning duels, winning headers, all of the basics. And that’s where you get your joy from,” he continued.

“There are other elements to football other than tactics. Tactics are one element. Shape, systems, technique, they’re all wonderful things. But there are other things that I feel like maybe we can improve on. And that’s what we’ll keep working on as well as the tactical side of the game.”

That’s just what we like to hear. Don’t worry about your philosophy until you’ve got some wins.

Rosenior also spoke about prioritising results over his “football philosophy”, something which will be quite comforting for fans who were worried we’d get a very idealistic coach in.

Only two Chelsea players won more duels than Facundo Buonanotte last night. He played well, created a lot in limited time on the pitch, and will have impressed anyone thinking of making a move for him in the summer.
