Koumas could STAY at Birmingham
Talk had been floated that the versatile forward would move back to base in January in order for the Premier League champions to fix him up with a more productive loan spell elsewhere.
The situation seems to have improved for the forward however with his first goal of the season against high-flying Coventry last weekend.
According to Davies it may see Koumas REMAIN at Birmingham for the rest of the season with the Blues’ head coach determined to take it game by game over Koumas.
“With Lewis, I was speaking to him about needing that moment,” he said according to the Birmingham Mail. “He needed that goal to be the catalyst to really kick on at the club.
“To be fair to him, he hadn’t had a lot of chances to do it because he’s been out of the team and just coming on for little bits, but to play, to start, to score in a game like that was a big moment.
“I’ve spoken to Lewis and he was really pleased with the day, his best day for us, and it’s a case of, ‘OK, let’s go from there and get ready for the next match’.”
Koumas set for a run in the team
Koumas has benefitted from the opportunity afforded to him through the injury of Demarai Gray. While the Jamaica international is out of the side until February the Liverpool man may prosper.
“We’ll keep open-minded on it, as Lewis will, as to how it develops through January,” Davies said ahead of the FA Cup tie against Cambridge.
“He’s got to be confident he’s getting the game time here and the opportunities here, as have Liverpool ultimately, and we’ve got to be really happy with Lewis and everything in that sense.
“What I will say is he’s had a massive impact on a big game and, as an attacking player, that’s all you can do.
“I’m pleased with him and focused very much on the present, which is the next match, and I’m sure he is too.”
