Stephen Lickert was 68-34 in eight seasons as Newport Central Catholic's football coach. Here's why he's stepping down.
Stephen Lickert has resigned as head football coach at Newport Central Catholic.
He confirmed the news to The Enquirer Jan. 13. Lickert became principal at Withrow University High School at the start of the current school year and has decided to leave coaching to focus on that job.
In eight years at NewCath, he was 68-34 including seven district championships and two state semifinal appearances.
The 1997 Highlands graduate played for a state championship team with the Bluebirds in 1996, and won an NAIA national championship while playing for Georgetown College.
Lickert had been a head football coach for the past 22 seasons, starting with three seasons at Dayton (2004-06).
He was at Holmes for four seasons, winning two district championships, then went to Campbell County for seven years where he won two district championships.
NewCath went 8-5 last season, falling in the regional final. The new head coach will lead the program into its first games on the new on-campus field, which will be ready for the fall season.
