Purdue Football Changing Their Schedule, Good or Bad? Staff Roundtable

Cowardly or smart?

You might have seen the report from Nathan Baird that the way Purdue football schedules could be about to change. If not, I’ve included his tweet with a link to his article below. With that in mind I asked the staff, is this a good move or a bad move?

Ledman:

To me this is nothing but good. Purdue football lives in the basement of the Big Ten and we don’t need to sugarcoat that right now. In order to move out of the basement you’ve got to win some games and right now the best chance for Purdue to do that is in the non-conference. Scheduling the likes of Notre Dame and Wake Forest isn’t a recipe for success for this Purdue team. As much as I would hate losing the Notre Dame game it is a necessary victim of the times. Plus, I’ve come around to the idea that no power conference team should schedule Notre Dame until they join a conference and stop getting preferential treatment for the CFP. So for now, schedule winnable games, try to squeeze into a bowl game and point to progress for your fans and future players.

Ryan:

This is hands down a good move. Purdue should know who they are right now, which is a team that is in no place to vie for a spot in the CFP so who cares about strength of schedule? Right now, Purdue needs to win games. Why get destroyed by Notre Dame or lose to a non-conference P4 team when Purdue is struggling just to get to 6 wins anyway? Take the easiest path possible to playing in a 13th game, bring more money into the program and if in the future, if you need to worry about your resume, play some bigger schools. Also, I really want every school with ties to ND to pull out of those games just to force the Irish to finally join a conference and quit being so pretentious.

Travis:

It is a cowardly move. Look, let’s be honest for a moment: Purdue is nowhere near the College Football Playoff right now. It is probably pretty far from the FCS playoffs (BRING BACK BROCK SPACK!). Are we really going to get that much more by scheduling Ball State, Indiana State, and Kent State. We can play the weakest non-conference schedule on the planet and it means nothing until we can win at least three Big Ten games again. Since we’re 3-24 against the league in the last three seasons combined I am not filled with conference.

Play Notre Dame. That game was fun this year because at least we scored points and were annoying. Play Wake Forest and North Carolina because it is nice to get rare opponents in West Lafayette. Purdue is not gonna get better by destroying Sisters of the Poor & Blind. I would like to see us have a tune-up game against the likes of Ball State, and then some more middle tier games like Wake and North Carolina coming up. Fresno State was fun, too. If you’re not going to play a Power 4 team at least get a decent challenge by playing someone like Fresno State, Oregon State, or Memphis.

Drew:

Step 1: Win more football games than you lose.

Does it matter who the wins come against?

Please return to step one for the answer.

Seriously?

It’s all in step 1. I don’t care if Purdue has to field a JV team in order to schedule an extra win.

I

DO

NOT

CARE

Win 7 games in back to back seasons by only scheduling H-VAC trade schools and then we can start taking a look at improving the schedule.

Jed:

This is an excellent move for the program. For Purdue to realistically get to the CFP, they simply need wins and with the evening of talent and schedules, strength of schedule doesn’t matter. If it did, IU destroyed that concept the last two seasons.

The schedule should be an FCS and two other opponents from the MAC, Conference USA, or Sunbelt. There are enough program there that would make the trip to West Lafayette for a payday that would get Purdue to 3-0.
