Boston lands All-Star lefty; what’s next after Weathers trade; a Yankee lineage is born; Ben Rice focusing on first; spring training schedules
New York Post | Mark Suleymanov: The Red Sox have agreed to terms with starter Ranger Suarez on a five-year deal, as reported by The Post’s Jon Heyman. The signing, which will net the left-hander $130 million and includes no deferrals, helps fortify a Boston rotation that was seen as a weakness entering this offseason. The pivot comes after incumbent third baseman Alex Bregman signed a long-term deal with the Cubs over the weekend. Suarez, an All-Star in 2024, posted a 3.38 ERA and 125 ERA+ in 763 innings across parts of eight seasons with the Phillies before hitting free agency.
CBS Sports | R.J. Anderson: The Yankees added their own left-handed starter, Ryan Weathers, on Tuesday. The team valued him for his high-90s fastball and intriguing pitch mix, banking on his lack of sustained success resulting from health issues. Even with Weathers in tow, injuries to several other starters make adding another arm to the rotation a possibility. The Brewers’ Freddy Peralta and Nationals’ Mackenzie Gore are reportedly among those on their wish list. The Yankees will likely look to augment their offense as well, with Cody Bellinger their top choice but Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette looming as alternatives if he signs elsewhere.
The Athletic | Brendan Kuty: ($) Ryan won’t be the first Weathers to pitch in the pinstripes. His father, David, was also traded to the Yankees by the Marlins and was a postseason hero during the 1996 playoff run, allowing just one run in 11 innings while picking up two wins along the way. The elder Weathers, who called his son’s trade “a full-circle moment,” talked up his progeny as a great fit for New York. “They’re going to get a blue-collar guy,” Weathers said. “He’s a lunchbox guy, man. He’s going to show up.”
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: As Ben Rice prepares for his second full season in the bigs, the 26-year-old is “prioritizing the work over at first base, but also keeping the catching in the equation.” This approach balances the Yankees’ desire to keep his left-handed bat in the lineup with regularity while also leveraging his defensive versatility. With Rice primarily playing first, the team’s catching tandem would be left-handers Austin Wells and J.C. Escarra, though GM Brian Cashman has espoused a desire to add a right-handed option to the mix. With Paul Goldschmidt departing in free agency, Rice is also looking forward to seeing expanded opportunities against southpaws after those were limited last season.
CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: Spring training is on the horizon, with the Yankees’ first pitchers and catchers workout scheduled for Thursday, February 12th. The team’s first full squad workout is slated for Monday, February 16th. This schedule is in line with the schedule for the rest of the clubs in Florida’s Grapefruit League as well as those in Arizona’s Cactus League, with no clubs scheduling pitchers and catchers workouts before February 10th and all commencing full squad workouts by February 17th. This schedule is slightly bumped up due to the World Baseball Classic, which will pull an array of players out of their MLB clubs’ camps later in the spring.
