Stop if you’ve heard this one before.
Penn State, playing at home, battled tooth and nail with a probable NCAA tournament team before finally faltering in the final minutes.
Well, it happened again on Wednesday night at the BJC with UCLA leaving town with a 71-60 win that still has the Nittany Lions (9-8, 0-6 B1G) in search of their first conference win.
After trailing at the half, Penn State opened with some life in the second half and took a 49-47 lead with less than 12 minutes to go thanks to a Dominick Stewart 3-pointer.
But things would go from bad to worse as UCLA would retake the lead and ultimately close out another disappointing loss for the Lions, who will now head to Maryland on Saturday.
In the “more bad news” department, Freddie Dilione IV, who was fantastic in the recent narrow loss to Purdue, played just eight minutes due to an ankle injury. Penn State is already down freshman point guard Kayden Mingo.
Stewart had 16 points to lead the Lions, while Eli Rice (14) and Josh Reed (12) also made it to double figures. But, Penn State was just 4-of-22 from 3-point range and they were crushed on the boards (-11 rebounding) on the night.
UCLA was led by Trent Perry, who finished with 30 points and made 4 3-pointers and was a perfect 12-of-12 at the foul line. The Bruins made 10 3-pointers for the game with Tyler Bilodeau also making four on his way to 21 points.
