He made good on his word. After 13 seasons, Adam Thielen has retired from the NFL, announcing his decision on social media a couple of days after his Pittsburgh Steelers lost in the playoffs to the Houston Texans.
Minnesota’s most improbable star receiver exits as a franchise icon, with his resume pointing straight toward a Ring of Honor future.
Thielen had hinted at retirement for about a year, and now he’ll walk away as a Vikings’ all-time great, even if his final stint with the team got a little weird.
Adam Thielen’s Vikings Legacy Still Lands Like a Surprise
The future Ring of Honor member hangs it up.
Thielen Retires
That’s a wrap for Thielen, who turned 35 last summer.
He scribed on Instagram, “What a ride it has been! Have been blessed with so many great relationships and mentors over the years that I am forever grateful for! Thank you to everyone who has supported me through the years it has meant everything to my family and I!”
Thielen played 11 games for the Vikings in 2025 before requesting his release. Minnesota was not using him in the offense, and Thielen reportedly wanted to finish his career actually playing a role — somewhere. That turned out to be the Steelers, who claimed Thielen off waivers six weeks ago.
The Vikings icon said after the waiver that he requested, “I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking.”
The Legacy
Thielen’s conclusion in Minnesota became weird and messy: his skill set diminished with the snap of two fingers, Minnesota refused to integrate him into the 2025 offense, and by Thanksgiving, he wanted to play elsewhere.
Thankfully, that situation will burn off in no time. No one will care in two years that Thielen bolted for the Steelers during his final season.
The Vikings gave Thielen a trial in 2013, and the man parlayed it into every athlete’s dream. He played for the team that he cheered for as a kid. It wasn’t just ornamental, either. By 2018, Thielen was a Top 5 wide receiver in the NFL, especially early in that campaign, as he built an immediate rapport with then-newcomer Kirk Cousins.
He’ll go down as one of the handful of Vikings players whose career is universally praised. Folks will still tell his story, growing up in Detroit Lakes, attending Minnesota State University, and then, against all odds, transforming a longshot tryout into a Pro Bowl career.
Career Resume
As a member of the Vikings, Thielen banked 542 receptions, 6,751 receiving yards, and 55 touchdowns. That’s 542 receptions, 6,751 receiving yards, and 55 touchdowns more than anyone expected when he tried out for the club in 2013.
For example, there’s a man on the Vikings’ practice squad — he just signed a futures deal early in the offseason — named Dontae Fleming. Can you imagine Fleming morphing into a two-time Pro Bowler? How about an All-Pro? Probably not. But that’s what Thielen did.
All told, Thielen ranks third all-time in Vikings history in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receptions, and fifth in receiving yards. Justin Jefferson has passed most of those marks by now, but aside from Jefferson, Thielen’s standing in the Vikings’ Top 5 record book will remain for quite some time.
Our Janik Eckardt on Thielen: “More memorable is his first stint in the Twin Cities, as well as his remarkable career path in the first place. Thielen, from Detroit Lakes, MN, grew up rooting for the Vikings and wearing Randy Moss’ jersey.”
“His college career took place at Mankato and he was not viewed as a draftable prospect. Ultimately, a regional combine opened the door for him to earn a try-out with his hometown Vikings in 2013, and he claimed a spot on the practice squad.”
For Vikings purposes, Thielen actually made the practice squad a springboard to relevance, at least in fans’ minds.
“In 2014, Mike Zimmer arrived and gave Thielen a roster spot. He was primarily used as a special teamer for two seasons before his breakout 2016 season, in which he recorded 69 catches for 967 yards and five touchdowns,” Eckardt added.
“His big seasons were 2017 and 2018, as he was a Pro Bowler each time with 1,276 and 1,373 receiving yards and a total of 13 touchdowns. Suddenly, he was no longer wearing Moss’ jersey, but hunting his records.”
The Go-To UDFA Story Forever
It’s also worth noting that Thielen is now the gold standard for undrafted free agent stories. That is — anytime a player is not drafted, someone will tell him the Thielen story, especially in the state of Minnesota.
Undrafted free agents turning into productive NFL talents aren’t necessarily rare or unheard of. However, a UDFA who exits his career on a team’s Top 5 statistical leaderboard is quite astonishing. And to make it sweet for Thielen, he did it all close to home.
Thielen doesn’t have a Hall of Fame resume, but he is already etched in the team’s lore — with no expiration date.
Oddly, the Vikings went undefeated in 2025 the moment they waived Thielen.
