Deerwood teaching pro Mark Tullo captures Chile Classic for the fourth time

Mark Tullo, a teaching professional at the Deerwood Country Club, won yet another tournament in his native country of Chile.

Deerwood Country Club teaching professional Mark Tullo has won the Chile Classic for the fourth time in his native country, 17 years after winning his third. 

Tullo, 47 and a former member of the DP World Tour, shot 66 in the final round at the Prince of Wales Golf Club and won by one shot at 10-under 274. He previously won the tournament in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

Also in the mix was former University of North Florida player and PGA Tour Champions member Felipe Aguilar, who shot 71 in the final round and tied for fifth at 7-under. He is also a native of Chile. 

Tullo won his 12th professional tournament and the seventh in Chile.  

First Coast Open kicks off 2026 schedule 

The 10th Jacksonville Area Golf Association First Coast Amateur will begin on Jan. 17 at the Deerwood Country Club, with 96 players competing in the first of 11 events on the JAGA schedule. 

The tournament's presenting sponsor is the City of Jacksonville’s Sports and Entertainment division. 

Players from nine countries and 42 colleges and universities will compete in the 54-hole event. Several colleges from the Northeast and Midwest have sent players to the First Coast, with nearly the entire team from Ball State in the field, and four from Middle Tennessee and Toledo and two from St. Bonaventure. 

The University of North Florida has the most representation from the South with eight players, followed by South Carolina with six, South Florida, Coastal Carolina and Mercer with five each and Tennessee with four. 

Deerwood is the venue for the second year in a row. Payne Denman, an assistant coach at South Florida, returns to defend his title. He won by a tournament-record nine shots at 18-under 198, with an opening round of 63. His 54-hole score also was the tournament record. 

World Amateur Golf Ranking points will be awarded to top finishers. Tennessee junior Bruce Murphy (No. 241) is the highest-ranked player in the field.  

Mark Anderson goes low 

Mark Anderson of St. Simons Island, Ga., beat his age of 65 and posted his low competitive round with a 62 at the PGA Golf Club Ryder Course in Port St. Lucie on Jan. 13 to jump from a tie for 36th to a tie for sixth in the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship. Anderson had six birdies, two eagles and a bogey. 

Anderson finished at 5-under-par 209, eight shots behind winner Justin Hicks (66).  

First Coast players stand out in FJT opener 

Three First Coast players finished among the top 10 in the Skyview Open, the first Florida Junior Tour event of the year at Skyview at Terra Vista in Hernando. 

Samuel Ha of St. Augustine (147) tied for third, four shots behind winner Joshua Castellanos of Winter Park (1-under 143). Dmytro Kulyk of St. Augustine (149) tied for fifth and William McGready of Fleming Island (151) tied for ninth. 

JWGA event has peaks at The Valley

The Jacksonville Women's Golf Association play day on Jan. 16 at the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley included two hole-outs.

Suk Hee Shin made a hole-in-one at the second hole, using a 7-iron from 103 yards. Cindy Riley made an eagle-two at the par-4 18th hole, using a driver and 7-wood at the 311-yard hole.
