The beloved coordinator is exploring options with other teams.
Significant changes continue to unfold in Pittsburgh following Mike Tomlin’s resignation after 19 seasons as head coach of the Steelers. In the wake of Tomlin’s departure, members of his coaching staff were informed they could begin exploring other employment opportunities, signaling a broader transition for the organization.
One longtime member of Tomlin’s staff, special teams coordinator Danny Smith, has already begun that process. On Friday, Smith completed a virtual interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their open special teams coordinator position, according to their X account.
Smith finished his 13th season with the Steelers in 2025-26 and has become one of the most recognizable assistants on NFL sidelines. He earned admiration from fans for his high-energy demeanor, blue-collar approach to coaching, and unmistakable habit of constantly chewing bubble gum during games. In recent seasons, Pittsburgh’s special teams units have been regarded as disciplined and competitive.
With more than 25 years of experience as an NFL special teams coordinator, Smith has been a fixture in the league for decades. Despite being 72 years old, he appears motivated to continue coaching, whether that future lies in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
A Friday article from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that a source said most of the team’s assistant coaches are no longer under contract. It’s unclear if Smith is among that group.
As the Steelers begin reshaping their coaching staff for a new era, Smith’s future remains uncertain. However, his interview with Tampa Bay underscores both his continued demand around the league and his desire to remain on an NFL sideline.
