Bo Bichette won’t be coming to Boston.
The high-profile infielder has landed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. There are opt outs after each of the first two seasons.
The Red Sox were reportedly interested in Bichette, and he would have been a logical pivot after losing Alex Bregman to the Cubs, but the former Blue Jay heading to New York.
“The Bo Bichette deal with the Mets is essentially the same one Alex Bregman signed with the Red Sox a year ago - $2 million more AAV with the same two opt-outs,” MassLive’s Sean McAdam wrote on social media.
A three-year deal with multiple opt outs is far shorter than experts were anticipating. The Athletic’s Tim Britton estimated Bichette would land an eight-year, $212 million contract, but with labor uncertainty on the horizon, the 27-year-old landed a shorter, more flexible deal at a higher annual value.
A two-time All Star, Bichette batted .311 last season with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs, and an OPS of .840. He finished 16th in the AL MVP voting and was a star in Toronto’s World Series loss to the Dodgers.
