Liverpool have been blown out of the water by a crazy contract offer. They didn't have a chance.
Liverpool chased Marc Guehi for essentially all of 2025. He was their big defensive target and one they came incredibly close to signing.
A deal seemed all but done right at the summer deadline. Crystal Palace were on board, Guehi himself accepted terms, and Liverpool were sailing towards another major signing.
Then Palace changed their minds. They understandably decided that losing their captain without a replacement would have an overwhelmingly negative effect on their season. One worth far more than the £35m Liverpool were willing to pay to get him a year early.
So they cancelled the deal and Liverpool were expected to move again in 2026. That hasn't happened, however.
Manchester City have stolen in front of everyone to sign Guehi, with a deal expected imminently. And looking at the numbers, the Reds never had a chance.
Marc Guehi to Manchester City
Alex Crook of Talksport has reported the details of the deal here in a Tweet. He says it's £20m upfront, which would be a steal on its own.
He then claims that add-ons can take this deal to £30m. That's a figure more in line with what you'd expect Palace to sell for - or at least, that's closer to what reports claimed.
But the headline here is that Guehi is expected to earn 'close' to £300k per week. That essentially means the centre-back will be one of the best-paid players in the Premier League, with only Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk earning more at Liverpool.
Alexander Isak likely earns in a similar range - but it's the kind of company you'd expect from a true star signing. Not the kind you see at centre-back because you've had a couple of injuries.
Guehi was always going to command a large salary because of his contract situation. City are willing to give him that and Palace their money, which was something Liverpool were never likely to do.
We can't imagine they were putting up £300k last summer, in other words. Perhaps they were - but it feels highly unlikely given that's not quite what Isak earns.
It does make the Reds' lack of movement a bit more understandable. We just hope there's a backup plan.
