ESPN’s SEC analyst Paul Finebaum, otherwise known as the Modern Mouth of the South, reckons a reckoning is underway. In fact, he reckons the Southeastern Conference, or SEC, might never again reach the heights it has achieved throughout most of the 21st century. Finebaum’s revelation comes as the conference fails to reach the College Football Playoff finals for a third consecutive season after Ole Miss was beat by Miami in the CFP semifinals this postseason.

“There’s a reckoning going on,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show podcast earlier this week, per On3. “On Saturday afternoon, I was walking around in my neighborhood (in Birmingham) and an Alabama fan — a nice lady, very prominent in the Alabama circles — said, ‘I’m starting to think it wasn’t so bad we only lost to Indiana by 35 points if Oregon lost by 34.’ And I said: ‘You can’t measure your program that way, please.’ But that’s how weird things have gotten.”

Weird, indeed, Paul.
