FC Bayern was missing a major star from its starting XI.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is not necessarily known for his willingness to rotate, but he did send Michael Olise to the bench for the start of the Bavarians’ Bundesliga showdown with RB Leipzig.
The moved sparked questions from fans and the media alike as there were worries that the Frenchman could be injured. That was not the case per Kompany, who indicated that putting Olise on the bench was a necessary move to help keep him fresh during a tough stretch of games.
“We simply have three games in six days. How else can I explain it? And then three more games in six days. But then three more games, and then three more games. This month of January is for all the guys, otherwise we won’t make it. Michael will probably still play an important role later on in the game,” Kompany told Sky before the match (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Bayern Munich could have used Olise during the first half. His creativity and attacking prowess was missed at times as the Bavarians struggled to establish control of the game with a makeshift backline.
