Manchester City couldn’t have played any worse in their 2-nil defeat at the hands of Manchester United yesterday. Nothing went right for Pep Guardiola’s side as they were comprehensively outplayed and outworked by a determined Manchester United side. Coming out of the match, it was reported that Phil Foden may have suffered an injury during yesterday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford. If that proves to be the case, a bad day for City got worse following the final whistle.
Phil Foden reportedly suffered a hand injury during yesterday’s match.
James Ducker of the Telegraph reported via X after yesterday’s Manchester derby, Phil Foden may have suffered a broken hand during the match. Furthermore, Ducker reported that Foden left Old Trafford with his right hand bandaged. As per a separate James Ducker report, Foden was set for scans in the coming days to determine the severity of any injury he suffered yesterday.
Patrick Austen-Hardy has relayed quotes from Pep Guardiola for the Mirror where Guardiola denied that Foden had suffered a broken hand. When asked if Foden had suffered an injury to his right hand yesterday, Guardiola said: “No, I don’t think so.”
Manchester City cannot afford to lose another player to injury.
Phil Foden was replaced by Rayan Cherki at halftime of yesterday’s match. It seemed to be a tactical decision by Pep Guardiola to take Foden off at halftime. Foden wasn’t at his best, and replacing him with Rayan Cherki appeared to be a good decision from Pep Guardiola, based on Foden’s first half performance.
What Manchester City cannot afford is another injury to a key player. Currently, Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic, Oscar Bobb and Savinho are all injured. Pep Guardiola’s side cannot afford to have Phil Foden sidelined for a period of time.
It remains to be seen if James Ducker’s report is a cause for concern for Manchester City. Confirmation of whether or not Foden has broken his right hand should come ahead of Manchester City’s upcoming Champions League league phase fixture against Bodø/Glimt. Despite Foden not being in the best form, City do need all hands on deck and cannot afford to lose another player to injury.
