New signing Marc Guéhi says being a Manchester City player will help him to become the very best footballer he can be.
City complete Marc Guéhi signing
The 25-year-old has agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract at the Etihad Stadium and becomes our second signing of the window, following Antoine Semenyo through the door.
As an experienced England international and captain of previous club Crystal Palace, our new No.15 arrives at City as one of the most revered defenders in world football.
However, speaking in his first interview as a City player, he made it clear that he’s come to City to get better.
“First and foremost, it’s such an honour, such a big club to come and play for,” he began.
“For me, I have always just been obsessed with getting better and wanting to improve and that’s something I am constantly striving for and this is the perfect place for me to do that.
“I have heard so much about the club and the fans, the players speak for themselves, the manager.
Guéhi: Test your knowledge of our new signing
“It’s definitely the right environment for me to improve and just get better.
“Hopefully I can bring what I have to the table to help every single person here too.”
Watching from afar, Guéhi has seen City reach unprecedented levels of dominance of English football under Pep Guardiola.
The Blues have picked up 18 major honours under the Catalan boss, including a record four Premier League titles in a row and the historic European Treble in 2022/23.
Guéhi: I can’t wait to work alongside ‘amazing’ Foden and Stones
Asked what he’s made of City’s success, Guéhi was focused on continuing to build for a prosperous future.
“[It’s been] Absolute domination to be honest and it’s been great to see where the club has come from,” he said.
“The growth and continued growth which the club wants to go for and strive for which is amazing.
“I am someone who just wants to come in and help and do his part and see how far the club can continue to grow.”
Guéhi first skippered Palace as a 21-year-old and has been the club captain during a fine period in their history.
He has long been earmarked for leadership roles, taking on the position with England’s Under-17 and Under-21 sides.
Now, as he approaches the peak years of his career, Guéhi says he’s willing to help this City squad in any way he can.
“It’s something that other people have picked up on,” he said when asked about why he’s so often selected as captain.
“It’s nothing I’d necessarily say I have or believe that I have, to be honest. I am just trying to be myself.
“It’s something that since I have had the opportunity to captain those sides, I have to tried to improve on it and really focus and hone in on those leadership skills.
“It’s something hopefully with this squad I can improve on and look at the other leaders in the team as well.”
