Brahim Diaz
At PSG, Luis Enrique and Achraf Hakimi’s teammates were glued to their screens yesterday to watch the CAN 2025 final. Speaking to the media on Monday, the coach shared his thoughts on the Real Madrid player.
On Monday, Brahim Diaz’s missed panenka in the CAN 2025 final was the talk of the town. At PSG, the topic came up as the squad prepares to face Sporting tomorrow in the Champions League. When asked if he would dare attempt a panenka in a final, Nuno Mendes was quick to sidestep the question.
“No, that question is for Brahim Diaz, I’m focused on PSG. If one day I get the chance to do it, we’ll see in the moment. My focus is on Sporting-PSG, that’s what matters most,” he stated in a press conference. Luis Enrique, for his part, was more forthcoming. The former Spain national team coach came to the Real Madrid player’s defense.
“Today, we talked about it on the bus. Everyone’s talking about Brahim, but I remember Zidane, who is a football god. He did it in a World Cup final, and I remember Sergio Ramos did it in a big match as well. When you score, nobody says anything, everyone applauds, but when you miss, there’s a lot of harsh criticism for a player who is truly outstanding. I know him—I called him up for the Spanish national team for a match. He’s an exceptional player, and this is very unfair,” he explained.
Luis Enrique wrapped up with these words: “I can understand that it’s tough to accept, but this is sport, nothing more. You have to show that you can win and lose. Whether you win or lose, nothing terrible happens—it’s just sport. What’s more important are the values you demonstrate to young people. Brahim is not a criminal or a bad person, and it’s important to say that. He’s a young player going through a tough moment.”
