On Monday, the Vegas Golden Knights (24-12-12) played the final of a three-game homestand against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-17-8). They squandered a winnable game with giveaways, forced passes, and a general lack of urgency. Travis Konecny burned them twice on two breakaways, and the Golden Knights fell 2-1 in regulation.
The Golden Knights entered today’s matchup on a seven-game win streak; inversely, the Flyers had lost five in a row. If you watched this game without knowing that, you would have assumed it was the other way around.
The Flyers opened the scoring 3:46 into the first period. Tomáš Hertl attempted a handoff to Kaedan Korczak; Travis Konecny read the play and forced the puck out of the zone. He beat Korczak to the puck, raced up ice on a clean breakaway, and beat Adin Hill glove side.
Miscommunication between Hertl and Korczak. Konecny scores on the ensuing breakaway.

“That’s on me,” said Hertl postgame. “That’s my mistake.”
Despite outshooting the Flyers 11-4 in the first period, the Golden Knights entered the second down 1-0. They went on to generate eight high-danger scoring chances, although they allowed the Flyers four of their own.
The Golden Knights finally broke through on their fourth power play of the game at 19:28 in the second period. Mark Stone fired a cross-ice pass to Jack Eichel above the left circle. Eichel held the puck and found Tomáš Hertl streaking towards the net, who redirected it between his legs and past Sam Ersson.
Take a bow, Tomáš Hertl. Really nice redirection on the power play.

In the third period, the Golden Knights pressed to no avail. And for the second time in the game, the Flyers capitalized on one of their turnovers.
The Flyers pulled ahead shorthanded at 7:22 in the third period. Jack Eichel drove into the zone and tried a blind pass for Tomáš Hertl. Once again, Travis Konecny read the play, broke up the pass, raced up ice, and scored on a breakaway. This time, however, he beat Adin Hill blocker side.
Another bad turnover, and Travis Konecny cashes in on a shorthanded breakaway.

The Golden Knights responded well, but, despite two opportunities to find the equalizer on the power play, couldn’t solve Sam Ersson again. They ended the night going 1-for-7 on the power play. Prior to the game, the Golden Knights boasted the 4th-ranked power play; the Flyers had the 22nd-ranked penalty kill.
Ultimately, the night ended with a failed 6-on-4 after Owen Tippett took a delay of game penalty with 1:33 remaining in regulation, and the Golden Knights fell 2-1.
