Indiana breaks Georgia football record with national championship win

The Indiana Hoosiers have set a new standard during the College Football Playoff era. In the process, Indiana broke a Georgia record

The Indiana Hoosiers and quarterback Fernando Mendoza are national champions for the first time in school history. Mendoza and Indiana beat the Miami Hurricanes and quarterback Carson Beck 27-21 in the national championship game.

In Indiana's national championship-winning season, the Hoosiers went 16-0 and earned the best record in college football history (tied with 1894 Yale). Indiana is the first team to go undefeated during the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff era.

Since the playoff began in 2014, only four teams ever finished the year with undefeated 15-0 records. The 2022 Georgia Bulldogs, 2023 Michigan Wolverines, 2018 Clemson Tigers and 2019 LSU Tigers all had perfect 15-0 records, but none of them won as many games as the 2025 Indiana team, who now holds the mark for the best record in the playoff era.

Of course, all of the other great teams of the playoff era did not have an opportunity to play a 16th game. However, it may be a while before we see another undefeated playoff national champion since most teams have to win a conference championship and three playoff games to do so.

Indiana's remarkable turnaround shows the newfound parity in the current era of college football. Things can rapidly change with the transfer portal, but the landscape of the sport will continue to have major changes year after year.
