The 49ers might need a new backup QB this offseason after the season Mac Jones had
One of the worst-kept secrets this offseason is San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Mac Jones and how other teams will have interest in him.
Jones had five games in which he threw for at least 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was fantastic in the games he started this season. Jones looked like a starter.
On Monday, Jones shared with reporters what his goal was when he first signed with the Niners:
I think when I signed here and talking to Kyle, that was part of the goal. To get back on track, have fun, and get around winners again. I feel like that’s helped me so much. I love everybody here. It was exciting this year. I feel like every time I came into work, it wasn’t work. We’re having fun in the quarterback room, in the offensive room, on the practice field.
For me to have back-to-back years where I played eight games was awesome. As backups, you don’t know when your time is going to be. Really excited for that opportunity that I had. I feel like there wasn’t a lot of drop-off, and the guys had a lot of fun.
And that’s something that the standard that Brock set since he’s been here. For me to learn from him and Kyle, and Mick and Klay, the list goes on. Really just got a Ph.D in football this year, and I want to keep getting better.
The shine usually wears off a backup quarterback after one or two starts. Jones’ third start was a win on the road over a team playing in the NFC Championship, where he threw for a season-high 342 yards. Jones’ last start came against the same team where he threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns. When you put up performances like that against a Super Bowl contender, teams don’t forget.
Jones said, “I’m on a two-year deal, but I believe I’m a starter in this league, and I’m excited to continue to get better this offseason and see what happens. In a way, I had two good seasons in one. I had a season as a starter, kind of, and a season as a backup. It was just so fun to get, like they say, the train back on the tracks. That’s what I wanted to do. I put a lot of good film out there.”
There isn’t a shortage of need at the quarterback position, and one of the projected top quarterbacks returning to school opened up another opportunity for Jones.
