Carrick makes early check on Man Utd kids

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick and his coaching team were at Leigh on Tuesday night to watch the club's under-21 side in their Premier League International Cup tie against Sporting. It was a feature of Ruben Amorim's time at United that, aside from one brief wander from his office at Carrington to a nearby pitch at the training ground, he never watched a single game involving an academy side. Carrick was only appointed a week ago but made the 17-mile journey from Carrington to Leigh Sports Village, along with coaches Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binnion, who has stepped up from under-21s coach to join the senior set-up for the remainder of the season.

United's director of football Jason Wilcox was also at the game, along with Darren Fletcher, who stepped in as interim head coach for two games following Amorim's dismissal but has now reverted back to leading the under-18 team, who play Derby in the FA Youth Cup at Old Trafford on Friday.

Fletcher's twin sons Jack and Tyler were both involved for United, in addition to full Paraguay international Diego Leon.

However, wideman Shea Lacey was not included in the home side's squad. He was banned for Saturday's Manchester derby after being sent off in United's FA Cup third round defeat by Brighton on 11 January.
