RR reader Mark wants Sunderland to release the handbrake and become more attack-minded — what do you think?

Dear Roker Report,
Now that we’ve virtually secured a second season in the Premier League, can we please take the handbrake off during the first half — especially at home?
On Saturday, we tended to pass back over the defensive line more than we needed to, and our first half goal count needs to improve for next season.
We also went behind, which seemed to spur the Lads on, but we’d be a more dangerous outfit after scoring first in games.
Against Burnley and beyond at home, it would be great to see the Lads playing with more freedom, playing the ball forward more quickly and attacking the line more, and I’m sure our strikers would benefit more and score more goals.
Brian Brobbey is now looking fit and sharp, and is the striker we want to see on the ball and putting it into the net most games.
Haway the lads

Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Mark. Thank you for your letter.
I fully agree that it would be great to see Sunderland play with more attacking freedom — we certainly have the players to do that and the returns of Chemsdine Talbi and Habib Diarra will also help — but I also have no real complaints about the pragmatic approach from Régis Le Bris that’s got us to within sight of the safety mark.
We’re also extremely hard to break down, very resilient defensively, and we work tremendously hard both with and without the ball, so the attacking side can definitely be improved, but it’s certainly worth considering the other elements that’ve made us such an effective team this season.
Dear Roker Report,
VAR should be totally scrapped.
It took nearly five minutes, they still couldn’t decide, they sent the referee to look at the screen and then they ruled the goal out. VAR is spoiling the game and the governing body of football should scrap it and go back to the way the game used to be played — with the referee in charge.
Football fans all over the world should protest for it to be removed from the game.
