RB Bryson Kuzdzal withdraws from transfer portal, returns to Michigan

Kyle Whittingham picked up another massive retention win, as Michigan Football RB Bryson Kuzdzal has reportedly withdrawn from the transfer portal:

Michigan has reportedly brought another one of its players back that initially entered the transfer portal, as running back Bryson Kuzdzal has withdrawn his name and is returning to Ann Arbor. This was first reported by Isaiah Hole of WolverinesWire.

Keeping the roster intact has been a central focus for first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham, and Kuzdzal’s reported decision continues a recent trend of Wolverines opting to stay put after exploring portal options. Michigan has already convinced several contributors to reverse course — including safety Jordan Young, cornerback Zeke Berry, defensive lineman Enow Etta, and offensive linemen Jake Guarnera and Andrew Sprague — and Kuzdzal is the latest to do so.

Kuzdzal entered the portal facing a crowded running back room. Jordan Marshall is the projected lead back when healthy, Oklahoma transfer Taylor Tatum was added this offseason, and five-star freshman Savion Hiter is already on campus. Even so, Kuzdzal’s return gives Michigan proven depth at a position that was tested by injuries last season.

A former walk-on, Kuzdzal made the most of his opportunities in 2025. He was forced into action when Michigan dealt with injuries at the position, and he responded with a breakout 100-yard performance against Maryland in his first career start. He also started in the Citrus Bowl, where he totaled 82 yards on 20 carries. He finished the season with 76 carries for 326 yards and four touchdowns.

With Kuzdzal back, Michigan’s running back room now includes Marshall, Tatum, Hiter, Kuzdzal, Micah Ka’apana, Donovan Johnson, and incoming freshman Jonathan Brown. The Wolverines did lose Justice Haynes and Jasper Parker to the portal, but Kuzdzal’s decision helps stabilize the group heading into the offseason.

As Whittingham continues to prioritize retention, Kuzdzal’s return is another very big step in the right direction.
