Eberl knows the ball is in the court of the FC Bayern supervisory board at this point…
Max Eberl’s contract at Bayern Munich is currently set to expire in June of 2027 and the club needs to figure out whether or not they would like to offer him an extension. Internally, all signals are pointing towards the club’s hierarchy giving a green light to a contract extension unless something catastrophic happens in the near future as Eberl’s tenure as board member for sport at the club thus far is overall seen as a success.
Eberl himself has remained coy every time he has been asked about his future and has simply stated that the ball is essentially in the court of Bayern’s supervisory board. It’s a relatively open secret that he’s done enough to warrant an extension beyond the summer of 2027, especially with the way things have gone so far this season, but the decision still has to come from above Eberl.
“It’s the decision of the supervisory board. I have nothing to do with it. I can only do my job and do what I think will make FC Bayern successful in the coming months and years. At the same time we have to keep an eye on the fixed deposit account. If everything goes well, I’d be happy when the supervisory board contacts me,” Eberl recently explained on a Bild TV appearance when he was directly asked about if he feels he’s going to be offered a contract extension (via @iMiaSanMia).
For what it’s worth, despite Eberl’s previous experiences from his tenures at RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach, there was a bit of a baptism by fire for Eberl when he first stepped into his role at Bayern in March of 2024. He was tasked with spearheading contract renewal efforts for Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich while also having to help determine who Thomas Tuchel’s managerial successor would be. At the same time, the directive from the club was also; figure out how to save some money — all the while being in a position at a club like FC Bayern where you’re always under the proverbial microscope.
Fast forward to now, and it’s already time for the club to start working on an extension for Harry Kane, looking for a Nicolas Jackson replacement, figure out if Manuel Neuer will extend for another year, decide on the futures of other players in the squad, and keep their eyes and ears open to opportunity after what’s been a quiet winter transfer window. Eberl will be at the heart of those efforts and it’s quite hard to argue that he hasn’t taken all of his tasks head on thus far and has passed the tests with flying colors.
Eberl’s Bayern Achievements At a Glance:
- Helping appoint Vincent Kompany as manager to replace Tuchel
- Helping sign Michael Olise (Crystal Palace) and Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
- Helping neogitate a deal to have Tah from the start of the FIFA Club World Cup
- Helping secure new deals for Davies, Musiala, and Kimmich
- Promoting integration of youth players into the senior squad (Lennart Karl, Wisdom Mike, etc.)
- Overall squad cost reduction
