Diego Costa says Antonio Conte was not liked during Chelsea spell
There’s no mistaking Diego Costa’s fiery reputation, but in terms of discipline, he picked up just one red card across 120 appearances for the Blues.
Behind the scenes, though, it was a different story. He recently opened up about clashes with a former manager he described as ‘angry’.
Costa did not hold back on the Obi One Podcast, explaining why he and other players struggled under Antonio Conte during their time together at Stamford Bridge.
“He’s a person who doesn’t trust others. He thinks he knows everything. You don’t enjoy training with him. He’s always angry, always with a long face.
“Nobody liked him. That’s why he didn’t last long,” the former Striker revealed.
Looking back on Antonio Conte’s time at Chelsea
Conte joined the club in 2016 after a tough 10th-place finish and quickly turned things around, guiding them to a Premier League title in his first year.
The 56-year-old picked up a major trophy in each of his two seasons at the club. He lifted the league title during his debut campaign and then signed off by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final, taking on Jose Mourinho’s side in what turned out to be his final match as manager.
Conte also set a notable record during his time at Chelsea, becoming the first manager ever to win three straight Manager of the Month awards.
Liam Rosenior remarkably became the manager to most recently win his first game as Chelsea boss, a distinction previously held by the Italian manager.
