Dodgers Retain Recently-DFA’d Utility Infielder

The Los Angeles Dodgers were able to retain a utility infielder who was recently designated for assignment, but successfully cleared waivers.

Ryan Fitzgerald

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated utility infielder Ryan Fitzgerald for assignment in order to make room for Andy Ibañez on the 40-man roster earlier this month.

However, the Dodgers were able to retain Fitzgerald as he went through waivers unclaimed and was then outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City this week.

Fitzgerald made his MLB debut last season with the Minnesota Twins after seven years in the minors. In 2025, he slashed .196/.302/.457 with four home runs and six RBIs across 46 at-bats. Fitzgerald found more success at the plate in the minors last season, where he slashed .277/.367/.469 in 59 Triple-A games.

The 31-year-old is considered a utility infielder as he can play shortstop, third base, and second base.

Who is the Dodgers Starting Second Baseman?

Fitzgerald should provide depth for an infield that is already dealing with injury. Utility man Tommy Edman is recovering from offseason ankle surgery, and his availability for Opening Day remains doubtful.

The expectation was Edman would assume the primary role as the Dodgers starting second baseman in 2026, but his injury will likely prevent him from being ready for the start of the season. The signing of former Detroit Tigers infielder Andy Ibañez also implies the Dodgers are preparing to be without Edman.

Ibañez should get an opportunity to compete for the starting job this spring, along with several other infielders at camp.

The Dodgers re-signed Miguel Rojas to a one-year deal early this offseason, which gives the team a solid defensive backup to Edman. However, Rojas is expected to fill in at both second and third base throughout 2026, in order to provide relief for Max Muncy at the hot corner during a long season.

Another re-signing expected to transpire in the coming weeks is Kiké Hernandez. The fan favorite is set to miss the start of 2026 as he recovers for offseason surgery on his left elbow.

The Dodgers have several second base options to evaluate this spring, including two of their younger players in Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland. The pair will likely be competing against each other for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Who do you think the Dodgers should choose to be their second baseman for Opening Day?
