🏀GIRLS BASKETBALL - Division I
Ponaganset 52, Classical 34
After the first quarter it looked like the Chieftains left their offense on the bus, but Marron Nerney got them back on track in the second as they rolled to a 52-34 win over the Purple.
Classical’s been playing great basketball of late and while it struggled against the Ponaganset defense, it kept scoring to a minimum and trailed 6-5 after the first quarter.
The next eight minutes looked much different. The Chieftains’ defense continued to dominate and Nerney found a flow within the offense, scoring 10 points in the second quarter to give her team a 20-9 lead at halftime. Ponaganset nearly doubled that in the third quarter, with 11 points coming from Nerney and Giuliana Bachini to build a 39-17 lead heading to the fourth.
Nerney had one of her biggest scoring performances of the season, dropping 26 points to lead Ponaganset. Kaitlyn Simoneau scored eight points and Bachini and Maci LaFontaine both scored seven.Â
Danielle Jimenez finished as the Purple’s top scorer with 14.

It’s been a reign of terror this week for the Lynx as Reign Whiteing had yet another big game in their 59-25 win over the Townies.Â
Whiteing put up 32 in Lincoln School’s win over La Salle on Tuesday, had 22 against Hope the following night and was equally dominant against East Providence. The junior center scored eight points in each of the first two quarters, helping the Lynx build a 35-15 lead at halftime the defense wasn’t about to give up.Â
When it was all said and done, Whiteing finished as the game’s top scorer with 25 points. Alivia Harris and Aubery Watkins both scored 10 for the Lynx and Sarah Berube added eight.
Trinity Provencher was East Providence’s top scorer with seven points.

🏀GIRLS BASKETBALL - Division III
Burrillville 47, Central 39
Avery Bousquet got the Broncos off to a terrific start, but their defense had to save the day in the end in the 47-39 win over the Knights.
Burrillville came out with one of its best first quarters of the season, as Bouquet capped her nine points with a 3-pointer, giving her team a 15-9 lead. The Broncos led by nine at halftime before Central’s Eveisha Santana went nuclear, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 14 points to send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 37.
Mackenzie Stone buried a jumper 22 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Burrillville a lead it wouldn’t give back. The Broncos defense held Central to a free throw in the first 2:30 of the fourth and one late and four points from Stone and Sofia Belluzzi helped close out the game,
Bousquet closed her night with 13 points, all coming in the first half. Brooke Lambert tied her for team best with 13, hitting two clutch free throws in the fourth quarter. Belluzzi also reached double figures, scoring 10.Â
Santana, a freshman, was a beast in defeat, dropping 22 points for Central.
Davies 48, North Providence 38
Aniyah Gomes continued her torrid scoring pace, getting the Patriots going at a rate the Cougars couldn’t keep up with in a 49-38 win.
Davies led early, but couldn’t get North Providence out of its rear-view mirror. The Patriots led by three after the first quarter, six at halftime and 31-26 at the third before Gomes stepped on the gas.
The senior came did what she’s done all season, scoring eight points in the final eight minutes and with key 3-pointers by Kylie Robert and Isabella Vargas to prevent any thoughts the Cougars had of a comeback.
It was a 24-point night for Gomes, who hit an impressive 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Jayline Brito Silva scored eight points for Davies and Shayla DaRosa added seven.Â
Mariana Xavier came up big late, scoring six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Madison Clayton also scored 10 points for North Providence.
Pilgrim 50, Middletown 20
Leah Shea and Madison Tuirok provided the second-quarter pop the Patriots needed to distance themselves from the Islanders in a 50-20 win.
Points were tough to come by in the first quarter and Pilgrim took a 9-4 lead over Middletown into the second. Shea and Tuirok got loose from outside, with Shea hitting a 3-pointer and making two other baskets and Tuirok drilling two from deep to put the Patriots up 28-11 at the break.
Pilgrim’s defense continued to control the game and make things comfortable over the final two quarters.
Eight Patriots found their way into the scorebook, led by 14 from Skylar Hawes, who ripped off nine points in the third quarter to slam the door shut on the Islanders. Tuirok and Shea both finished with nine and Maddison Belanger scored eight in the win.
Finley Bernard was Middletown’s top scorer with five points.
Prout 58, Woonsocket 26
The Crusaders were locked in on defense for four quarters and the points came from all over in a 58-28 win over the Villa Novans.
Prout couldn’t have asked for a better start, with four players getting two buckets each and the defense did its job to get a 19-6 lead after the first quarter. Woonsocket continued to struggle with the Crusaders’ defense, scoring single digits in each of the remaining three quarters.
The points came from all over as nine different players scored for Prout. Lauren Gill led the Crusaders with 15 points, the lone scorer in double figures. Millie Maher almost got there with nine points, and Sophia Hipsman added eight in the win. Libby Balbat, Katie LaPlante and Catilin O’Hara had five points apiece.
Akira Moise finished as Woonsocket’s leading scorer with nine points.
