The leadership group has been tweaked.
Barcelona have reportedly made Ronald Araujo the club’s first captain following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s January exit for Girona.
Ter Stegen was the club’s first captain, with Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Raphina also part of the leadership group for the 2025-26 season.
Yet the goalkeeper’s exit means that things have changed a little.
Reporter Santi Ovalle explains what’s happened: “Araújo will be the first captain, Frenkie the second, Pedri the third, Raphinha the fourth. And when none of these are on the field, the armband will be worn by Eric or Ferran.”
Araujo is still on the comeback trail after taking a mental health break after his sending off in Barcelona’s Champions League defeat to Chelsea.
He was a second-half substitute against Slavia Prague last time out in the Champions League but was back on the bench on Sunday for Barcelona’s La Liga clash with Real Oviedo at Camp Nou.
Meanwhile, Eric Garcia has been tipped as a future first-team captain on several occasions recently, with Hansi Flick admitting he could wear the armband in the future.
