Liverpool have been linked with Xabi Alonso after reports claimed the club contacted his agent amid poor Premier League results.

Liverpool’s struggles in the 2025 /26 season have sparked fresh speculation about head coach Arne Slot and his long term future at Anfield.

Spanish newspaper AS reported that Liverpool officials have made early contact with Xabi Alonso’s agent exploring the possibility of the former Real Madrid coach taking charge in the near future.

The Reds defeat to Bournemouth exacerbated Liverpool's decline in the league and increased the pressure on Slot during his second season in charge.

Alonso mentioned as possible summer option

According to AS, Liverpool reached out to Alonso’s representative Inaki Ibanez to ask about the coach’s situation.

The report claimed Alonso who was dismissed from Real Madrid only days ago would prefer to rest until the end of the season but gave positive response through his camp.

Alonso is said to be open to returning to Liverpool where he played during his career especially after leaving Bernabeu.

The Spaniard previously rejected offers from both Liverpool & Bayern Munich in summer 2024 choosing instead to continue his successful project at Bayer Leverkusen where he won historic domestic double.

However the story has not gone unchallenged. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano denied that any official contact has taken place so far.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano stated that as of Sunday, there has been no direct communication between Liverpool and Alonso’s representatives.

He added that Alonso is expected to return to coaching soon but Liverpool have not made formal approach at this stage.

ِAnd he wrote a short while ago on his X:

"Xabi Alonso has said YES to Liverpool. Unfortunately, the club hasn't asked him anything"

This contradiction suggests Liverpool’s position remains unclear with speculation growing but no confirmed negotiations.

Slot still backed until end of season

Despite the pressure, reports in Spain indicated that Slot has been informed he will stay in charge until at least the end of the current season after which the club will assess his future.

Liverpool have dropped to fifth place in the Premier League after 23 match sitting on 36 point, 14 behind leaders Arsenal.

The team have not won league match since the start of 2026 drawing four time and losing once in five game.

Their domestic form contrasts with strong Champions League campaign highlighted by 3-0 win away to Marseille earlier this month.
