Liverpool looking at Julian Alvarez
A report in Football Insider claims that Liverpool are maintaining their long-standing interest in Julian Alvarez but would only sign him if a striker left the club.
With Hugo Ekitike impressing hugely since moving for £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt that opens the door to Richard Hughes selling Isak to facilitate a deal for the Argentina international.
“Liverpool and Arsenal both looked at him last summer as well, but obviously they looked elsewhere to strengthen their attacks, with the likes of Alexander Isak moving to Liverpool and Arsenal moving for Viktor Gyokeres as well,” the report reads.
“I think that would probably rule them out for next season unless there are other attacking departures at both of those clubs.”
Isak would have to leave if Alvarez is signed
Alvarez was a target for Liverpool before he left River Plate for Manchester City in 2022. The 25-year-old then joined Atletico in the summer of 2024 - going on to enjoy a brilliant first season under Diego Simeone.
But there are signs of strain at the Metropolitano - with Spanish reports suggesting that Alvarez could force his way out of the club next summer.
Given that he cost Atleti a fee that could reach £82m it is unlikely that Liverpool could land him for a bargain.
The World Cup winner is under contract until 2030 and so it could even take the same kind of money to get him out of the Spanish capital.
Isak will be well aware that funds will be needed if Richard Hughes is going to get this deal over the line.
He needs to get back fit as quickly as possible and offer Liverpool the kind of goalscoring that convinced the club to make a record-breaking bid for his services.
