St. Michael Catholic (AL) head football coach Philip Rivers won’t be making the jump from high school to the NFL after all. For now, anyways.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Rivers has reportedly withdrawn his name in consideration for the vacant Buffalo Bills’ head coaching position. Just last week, Rivers interviewed on Friday for the Bills head coaching job after playing in four games this past 2025 NFL season for the Indianapolis Colts.

In five seasons coaching Alabama high school football, Rivers has compiled an overall record of 43-15 at St. Michael Catholic and the team will be a favorite to win a state championship in the AHSAA’s newly created Class 2A private classification.

The future NFL Hall of Famer just completed his fifth season as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic, with the Cardinals’ 2025 campaign ending in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 4A state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Jackson, 44-23.

The Cardinals finished the 2025 season with a 13-1 record and Rivers’ son, Gunner, returning for his senior campaign may have played a major factor in the decision. Last season, the younger Rivers ended up completed 237 of 343 passes for 3,176 yards, 46 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Rivers’ best game this season was in a 49-7 win over Orange Beach, completing 16 of 18 passes for 271 yards and four scores.
