Ruskin (Fla.) Lennard four-star safety Mekhi Williams made an early commitment to Florida State on March 26, 2025.
He’s remained solid with the Seminoles since, but he also hasn’t shied away from other programs. To no surprise, the other big in-state programs are involved.
Williams announced an offer from the new Florida staff on Monday morning. A couple hours later, he posted a pic throwing up The U with Miami defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge:
Williams told Rivals’ Chad Simmons and Greg Biggins this month that while he’s still committed to FSU, he plans to take his visits and see the process through. That includes taking a slew of official visits this summer.
When speaking with Biggins, Williams tabbed Auburn, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Miami as programs he’s eager to get a look at. Over the weekend, he went down to Tampa to get a look at USF and its big junior day event.
Again, though, Williams says all the right things about where he stands with his pledge to Mike Norvell and Florida State.
“Florida State was always my school growing up,” Williams said, “Being from Florida, you always like one of the Florida schools and for me, it was was FSU, I had that connection with the Noles.
“Florida State also has great history and tradition and I love the coaches. I know I can get a great education there too so that’s why committed early.”
Williams is coveted for a reason. He’s the No. 120 overall prospect and No. 11 safety in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 12 player in Florida.
To date, he headlines FSU’s 2027 class, which features four commits. Miami also sits at four commits in the cycle, while Florida landed its first pledge over the weekend via four-star cornerback Amare Nugent.
FSU knows it will have to weather the usual recruiting storm, but it has Williams’ commitment and intends on signing the blue-chip defensive back in less than 11 months.
“I think the way recruiting is now, you have to keep it open until the end,” Williams told Biggins. “You never know what can happen so I’m going to play things out. I’m still committed to Florida State and I’m happy with my decision but I’m going to listen to other schools and take my visits to be sure.”
