More than half the prep hoops games got cancelled this past week due to winter storms, blistering cold temps, but the Comets upset Homer's homecoming.
HILLSDALE COUNTY — More than half of Hillsdale County’s scheduled high school basketball games were wiped out by winter weather this past week, but several teams still managed to push forward with key league matchups and milestone performances.
Jonesville provided the headline moment, as both the Comets’ girls and boys teams swept Homer on homecoming night, extending momentum into the heart of the Cascades West race.
Jonesville upsets Homer homecoming with sweep
The Jonesville girls basketball team rallied late to pull out a 49-47 road win at Homer, closing the gameon an 8-0 run after trailing by six in the fourth quarter.
Coach Tom Dunn said the finish came down to trust and execution after his team spent most of thenight playing from behind.
“We trailed most of the game, but my kids got guts,” Dunn said. “We made enough stops. That run atthe end was on the defensive end.”
Jonesville sealed the win on a late play Dunn admitted the Comets had not practiced much this season. Megan Lee finished the possession with a driving layup after a strong pass into traffic.
“We haven’t really run that all year,” Dunn said. “I didn’t know if it was going to work, but the kids made the play.”
Bryn Rusk led Jonesville with a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Lee added 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Kira Van Kampen finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Dunn credited Rusk for setting the tone with her effort on both ends, particularly on the glass and at the free-throw line late.
“Her offensive rebounding and free throws were the difference,” Dunn said.
The Comets improved to 6-6.
Comet Boys
The Jonesville boys continued their surge atop the Cascades West with a pair of wins, extending theirwinning streak to five games. Jonesville rolled past East Jackson 75-30 and later defeated Homer 69-60.
