Season Check-In

Where do things stand currently for the ‘Cats?

With no game until Friday, I figured this would be another opportunity to assess the current landscape for our beloved Wildcats.

Overall record: 15-5

Conference record: 6-3 (tied for third with Creighton)

NET Ranking: 34

KenPom Rating: 27

Bart Torvik: 31

Road/Neutral Record: 7-3

Strength of Schedule: 30

Current projected seeds in Bracketology:

ESPN – 7 in the West vs Ohio State

CBS – 8 in the West vs NC State

ON3 – 8 in East vs Saint Mary’s

*Note that FOX has Nova as a 6, but it is a couple of weeks old*

Remaining Schedule:

Vs Providence (Quad 3)

Vs Seton Hall (Quad 2)

@ Georgetown (Quad 3)

Vs Marquette (Quad 3)

@ Creighton (Quad 1)

@ Xavier (Quad 2)

Vs Connecticut (Quad 1)

Vs Butler (Quad 2)

@ St. John’s (Quad 1)

@ DePaul (Quad 2)

Vs Xavier (Quad 3)

Total tally:

Quad 1 – 3

Quad 2 – 4

Quad 3 – 4

Quad 4 – 0

As you can see, there’s not a lot of “difference maker” opportunities left. That said, the overall metrics have gone up since we did the conference check-in about a month ago (notably Xavier). This means that the Big East has improved since conference play started, which in turn says that the league isn’t in as bad of shape as we thought coming into the new year.

Villanova only has one Quad-2 loss on the year (Creighton) with four Quad-1 losses. There are four games remaining in the quest to avoid any Quad-3 defeats, and seemingly no chance at a Quad-4 loss. Despite going 3-3 in the last six games, the Wildcats are in a healthy spot approaching the final third of the schedule.
