And with that, a rough trip out east has come to an end for the Vegas Golden Knights.

On Tuesday, the Golden Knights would come up short of another thrilling comeback, falling to the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime.

Wanting a quick start to this game, the Golden Knights got exactly what they were looking for early. Taking advantage of an aggressive move by Montreal, Pavel Dorofeyev and Braeden Bowman were able to start a two-on-one breakout. Dorofeyev was ultimately able to finish the play unassisted, securing the first goal for the Golden Knights and extending his team lead with his 23rd goal of the season.

The second period would see the Canadiens make a push in front of the Montreal faithful. Despite Cole Caufield having a goal called back for offsides, Golden Knights nemesis Philip Danault was able to get the home team on the board with a deflection that beat Akira Schmid.

Caufield would not be denied a second time, however. Later in the period, Schmid would make an excellent save to shut down a two-on-one rush for the Canadiens. Unfortunately, the rebound would find its way to Caufield, who hammered it in for his 30th goal of the season.

Jakub Dobes was having an excellent game between the Dorofeyev goal, but the Golden Knights’ leading scorer would eventually find a way to get the better of the Montreal netminder again. With just over three minutes left in the third period, Ben Hutton would rip a shot from the point that deflected off of Dorofeyev and into the net. It would extend Dorofeyev’s lead with 24 goals, but also be his eighth goal in the last nine games.

Despite Schmid’s overtime heroics, however, the Golden Knights would fall short for the 12th time by way of Jake Evans outwaiting the Vegas netminder.

The Golden Knights will now look to rebound from what was a rough road trip with a quick return home to face the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
