The Syracuse Orange are in a bit of a rough patch, and the SU fanbase is starting to wonder what a head coach might look like beyond Adrian Autry.

One name that gets thrown out often: Gerry McNamara, the former Syracuse assistant and Orange legend who is now the head coach at Siena in the MAAC.

Siena is having a strong season, and so eyes are wandering and wondering whether McNamara would be the right man to take over the big chair at SU.

McNamara, for his part, would never call for such a move.

He was asked about Autry on Wednesday, though, and gave a thoughtful answer.

"I talk to Red all the time," McNamara said, using Autry's nickname. "That's my guy. I haven't talked to him in a week or two. But yeah, those are as good of friends as I have in life. Let's set professionalism aside and what we do for a living. That's a guy I spent more than a decade working with, a colleague, a guy that lived five houses from me. A great family friend. Our wives are friends. His son Trey came to see our team in D.C. I talk to those guys all the time."

That's exactly the kind of answer you'd hope G-Mac would give, of course.

The pair were assistants under Jim Boeheim for a long stretch, and Autry was the more senior assistant when the legend retired, making Autry the logical successor.

Syracuse hasn't been able to end its NCAA Tournament drought, though, and now in the midst of a four-game losing streak, questions are being asked.

They're tough ones to answer, but Autry has to feel good at least knowing that McNamara, even from outside the building now, has his back.
