TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Ichabods are finding strength in its veteran leaders.
Out of Washburn’s top five leading scorers, four of those are seniors, mixed with one junior.
Veteran leadership has been apparent for this group this season, and a top duo continuing to lead the way for this squad are seniors Yiibari Nwidadah and Payton Sterk.
The center from Olathe leads the squad in points and rebounds per game, continuing to be a dominant force in the post for Washburn. This season, Nwidadah averages close to 13 points and eight rebounds per game, while also shooting 55.9% from the floor.
As for the guard from Colorado Springs, Sterk is a force of nature from beyond the arc, averaging 33% from three. She ranks seventh in the MIAA in three-pointers and has a team-high of 33 triples. She’s averaging 12.2 points per game while shooting 37.2% from the floor.
“They’ve done a really nice job in these last few weeks of leading by example,” Washburn head coach Lora Westling said. “Showing that no matter if you’re a senior or a freshman, the job is the job, you’ve got to keep getting better.”
Washburn is 14-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Ichabods are riding a four-game win streak into two road tests this weekend.
Next up, the Ichabods are at Fort Hays State on Jan. 29. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
