A good call from the FC Bayern manager
It was mildly surprising to see Jonas Urbig don the goalkeeper gloves against PSV Eindhoven following his role in the defeat to Augsburg last week (the first goal was partly on him). Vincent Kompany said that he gave the 22-year-old the starting berth because he did not want the player’s confidence to falter.
“During the holiday in December, I already knew that Jonas would get two games in January,” Kompany revealed (Tz as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “After the game against Augsburg, it was 100% clear to me that this is a moment where a young player can take steps forward. We have an incredible luxury in this position. Now it’s Manu’s turn again [against HSV]. And we’ll decide when Jonas will get his next chance.”
Urbig proved his worth against better opposition by producing numerous saves to limit PSV to just one goal, scooping up the Man of the Match award in the process. It’s great to see him rebound after a subpar performance last time, clearly showing that he’s unfazed by it.
