Brooks Koepka made his long-awaited return to the PGA Tour on Thursday, teeing it up at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open.

Koepka was under the spotlight in La Jolla, as he played his first PGA Tour event since June 2022.

The response from other players to his return has been mixed.

Hideki Matsuyama was surprised by how quickly Koepka returned to the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, world number one Scottie Scheffler welcomed Koepka’s comeback, saying it’s a positive move for the tour.

Koepka himself seemed happy to be back, appearing relaxed during the opening round at Torrey Pines.

Koepka turned in a steady, though unspectacular, showing on day one of the Farmers Insurance Open.

He carded a one-over-par 73 in what was his first round back on the PGA Tour.

The crowds were out in force to catch Koepka’s return, with thousands gathering at Torrey Pines to watch him tee it up again.

But how did fans respond to seeing him back? Sky Sports’ Inci Mehmet had some insight from inside the ropes.

“I think there is a lot of positivity.

“Plenty of excitement. You can see a lot of fans trying to lean over the ropes just trying to get a glimpse of him.

“He has definitely been the needle mover of this tournament,” he concluded.

Brooks Koepka takes the first steps back on his comeback trail

Koepka received a warm welcome from the crowd in Southern California, and that should give him a boost as he works to rebuild his game.

From here, it is about getting back into the rhythm of daily competition and putting in the hard work to reach a point where he feels he can compete for wins again.

His track record speaks for itself. With five majors to his name, Koepka has always risen to the occasion when it matters most.

This week’s result at Torrey Pines is not likely to define him. The key will be showing gradual progress over time, rather than chasing immediate success.

The journey back is just beginning, and it is going to require patience – from both Koepka and those rooting for him.
