Real Madrid received a major boost at Valdebebas as Antonio Rüdiger took part in part of today’s training session with the group, a sign that his recovery is progressing well and that a return to matchday action could be close.

After roughly a month away from full training, the German defender is now pushing to be included in the squad for Sunday’s match against Rayo Vallecano — a development that would come at a crucial time for Madrid’s back line.

Out since Atlético in Super Cup

Rüdiger has not featured since the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atlético Madrid on January 8. Despite not being at 100%, he played through discomfort to help the team, but the effort ultimately took its toll and his knee problem worsened.

He was then forced to miss the final against Barcelona and shifted his focus toward individualized rehab work, with the goal of returning in strong condition for the most decisive part of the season.

Positive feeling, but knee will dictate timeline

While the current mood around his recovery is optimistic, the club is still treating the situation carefully. Rüdiger’s availability will depend on how his knee responds day-to-day, and his progress over the next sessions will determine whether he can realistically be cleared for the weekend.

A huge piece for a depleted defense

For Álvaro Arbeloa, getting Rüdiger back would be significant. Madrid have been stretched defensively, and with Éder Militão already out long-term, the German’s return would restore not just quality, but leadership.

Rüdiger is viewed as one of the defensive leaders in the squad — both on the pitch and in the dressing room — and his presence could help stabilize a unit that has struggled for consistency in recent weeks.

Alexander-Arnold also returns to partial training

Trent Alexander-Arnold was in a similar situation during the session, also completing part of training with the group.

However, the Englishman’s case is considered more delicate. He has been unavailable since early December — after the match against Athletic Club — and has dealt with recurring muscle issues throughout the season.

Like Rüdiger, his potential inclusion for Rayo will depend on how he feels in the next training session, with the coaching staff expected to make a decision based on his response and fitness levels.
